If you grew up in the 90s you would remember Nickelodeon’s hit show, Kenan & Kel. The show was a huge hit and it starred Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell. Now, Kel is all grown up and I got a  chance to interview him on his recent projects and his faith. Enjoy

YADA: From Child Star to Husband and Director, how has your life evolved over the years?

KEL: It has been an amazing journey and I am thankful that when I was living in sin God did not leave me. I truly understand what it means to be a new creature in Christ and now my life is more about my kingdom purpose. I am concerned with what God wants me to do I am no longer concerned with what the world and my flesh wants me to do. Spiritual growth has been an important part of who I am today. I seek him for every mission he appoints for me to do. I also trust that he will give me the Faith and endurance to accomplish the goals and dreams he gives me. When I learned to put Jesus Christ first in everything that I do my relationship with God grew strong and so did my spirit.

YADA: She is Not My Sister. Talk to us a bit about the film. Why did you decide to do it?

KEL: She is not my Sister is the story of how a high school senior‘s life takes a turn when her single father returns home from  a Vegas vacation, married to the single mother of  her high school arch enemy. This film is for teens that have been bullied or teens that are bullying. I wanted to do a film that showed how learning to love and forgive like Jesus is the answer to stopping bullying. There have been movies on bullying in the past but none used Faith as an answer. I wanted to let teens know that they have an option.

YADA: What were the challenges that you faced while shooting the film and how did you overcome them?

KEL:  This entire project was built by faith from the casting to the last frame. God was very instrumental in the entire project. When you start shooting any project it will be challenges along the way but they are quickly resolved when you give the project to Christ because of this the entire cast and crew had a great time.

YADA: You are also directing music videos, what is the difference between directing a music video and a feature film?

KEL: I treat them both the same they both start as a story that you have to bring to life on screen whether its music lyrics or dialogue from a script you still have to paint the story. The only difference is the time it takes to shoot. Shooting a music video is way faster than shooting a film.

YADA: What is your creative process like?

KEL: After giving glory and thanks to God for the creative idea and story then it is all about creating the atmosphere that is big for me. When I am writing a story, my office becomes that story. I listen to music that fit the atmosphere of the story. I do research on my characters job and personalities. I like to really know the characters so I can write reactions that make sense for the personality they have been given. I want the story to feel real. I draw my own storyboards before directing AS  it really helps the shooting days go smoother when you have a visual for your DP and you to refer back to.

YADA: You seem to be very vocal about your faith. When did you realize that it was time to be committed to Christianity?

KEL: God has brought me through so much in my life and I feel the need to share the tools I learned as a Christian to overcome shipwrecks that came up in my life. It is important to me to share my testimony with others so they can see that God’s way really and truly works. A person might be about to give up on life but then hears about how I was feeling the same way they did in my past but I chose to keep going and got through that rough test in my life. Sharing your victory over something that seemed impossible to beat helps someone else’s faith grow so I always share the scripture, what I studied and what I prayed to get me over that mountain and destroy that Giant.

YADA: What are the challenges that Christians face in Hollywood?

KEL: What the world thinks of you and doubt. Non-believers will try to derail you off the path God has giving you but you have to stay focused and do what he says to do in media and trust in him not the press. God will put the right people around you to get the task done.

YADA: What non-film projects are you involved in?

KEL: I am big on speaking to church youth groups and schools about Christ. You can always catch me touring doing this. When I was young, I would have loved for someone that I watched on television to give me a word that they got from Christ that would help me get closer to Christ. Sharing means caring I know that sounds corny but it is true. I care about God’s children and I want them all to be saved. So I share my stories of faith and wisdom I have learned.

YADA: What do you want your fans to take away whenever they watch a project that involves you?

KEL: The message behind it. It should give you a word to take home with you.  A Godly message that renews your mind.

YADA: Final word for our readers

KEL: Love, Forgive, Learn, Give, Worship and Praise God and know that he has sent the Holy Spirit to comfort you during every day. So rejoice in be glad in it.
