Fear Of The Dead

by Yada MagazineMay 22, 2015

She ran into the parlour frantically and made me almost jump. I was startled by the way she called my name and my concern grew with every second I looked at how jittery she stood. ‘What’s the matter?’ I finally asked. I was fighting the idea that there could be someone trying to break into the house through her room. We’ve been robbed once and needless to say, it’s not an experience I would care to recount, except of course, I was invited to deliver it as a nobel speech of which I would be awarded and celebrated, then why not. She told me to follow her back to her room and see ‘something’. Oh no! It’s probably that snake we saw some weeks back that made us to fumigate the house, I thought. ‘Silence!’ I had to shout to myself. I was already beginning to feel like Sméagol. Knowing my younger sister, she would not describe what happened, so I just decided to follow along and save myself the trouble of asking. ‘Ok’ I said.

I stepped into the room to find out that she was not right behind me. She stopped at the entrance and was pointing to the front of her wardrobe. With a near-whisper and a spooked face, she said ‘there’. You have to understand, her funny behaviour made all sorts of things run through my mind, but as the older brother, I had to act cool, I had to look like one who could handle the situation — whatever it was. I turned to see a [...]

Letters To Tomi: The Dilemma

by Yada MagazineMay 20, 2015

My dearest Tomi,

I hope you’ve been great. Been a while since I last saw you. Your replies have been very heart warming. You certainly are right, relationships are definitely overrated and the virtue of patience, down played. I think most of it stems from the false romantic fairy tales Hollywood keeps selling to us. The situation is further compounded as people emotionally launch out prematurely. I believe a degree of emotional independence (among other things) has to be achieved before one should venture into such commitment. Albeit, we are all learning to live.

In your last letter, you detailed a rather unfortunate occurrence that got you disappointed and angry. A very heart-wrenching news. It made rounds on the internet and his actions were absolutely inexcusable. To think that he would blatantly stand in front of his congregation and say it was none of their business was just out rightly irresponsible. Silence of his infidelity would have been preferred or golden even. This pastor’s extra-marital affair is saddening.

However, here’s what I need you to consider, you shouldn’t be discouraged about this mishap, because Jesus gave you salvation not the pastor. We learn from them, we submit to them, we acknowledge and honour them, but just as Paul told the people of Lystra, when they tried to exalt him as a god, they are men of ‘like passions’. Meaning, they are plagued with the very [...]

Letters To Tomi: On the subject of sin

by Yada MagazineMay 3, 2015

My dearest Tomi,

I’m very delighted to hear that my last letter is beginning to help redefine your perspective on love. I trust that you’ve been good. I thought I should share some thoughts on what our evangelicals constantly harp about. Some preachers, it seems, over emphasise it, and others under emphasise it. How come we keep threatening people with fervent heat when Jesus kept telling us that ‘your sins are forgiven’?

Ever wondered what sin really is? Is it just not drinking? Or not fornicating? Or not stealing? Or not killing? Or not lying? Is it any of these? All of these? None of these? Could ‘morality’ be all there is to living rightly? The main words used in Hebrew that have been translated to mean sin are majorly ‘chata’, ‘pesha’ and ‘avon’. The Greek word translated to mean sin in the New Testament is ‘hamartia’. The Hebrew and Greek words ‘chata’ and ‘hamartia’ respectively, connote the same meaning, which is to ‘miss the mark’. It conveys the picture of an archer who shoots an arrow but doesn’t get the bullseye. While, the Hebrew words ‘pesha’ and ‘avon’ basically infer a trespassing. Doing what you’re not supposed to be doing or being where you’re not supposed to be.

Love in-Spirited

by Yada MagazineApril 30, 2015

I’ll choose to stay up late in the night to write love letters and spoken word poetry about you my love,

To read the 66-book-love-letters you wrote to me,

To write about the beauty of your face when you stood just two inches from me,

So intimately close to each other that the very breath of your nostrils became the air that filled my lungs,

Causing my cells and organs to kick and scream, bursting into life with the sounds of activity as your magnificence filled my senses,

My body ached for your touch.

When Elohim stood in front of the first man Adam to breathe the breath of life into him, the Ruach-Elohim,

Adam awoken to see his first sight, God standing right in front of Him,

God who is love. God is love,

You are my love at first sight.

I can’t wait till we get re-united again at the marriage supper of the Lamb,

Although right now I’m here handing out invitation letters for people to attend our marriage ceremony,

And even if I had 99 problems you wouldn’t be one,

Even if I had 99 problems, you could never be one.

Yes, the world would know that we have been with you,

For our faces would shine from having seen your face; as we behold the mirror of your written Word, we are continually being changed into your very image,

Our hearts would be changed because it would no longer be made of stony tablets but would [...]
